Question He graduates truck driving school soon

So I was wondering, what is it REALLY like? How often are they gone? What are some of the family friendly companies? How do you cope?
Are they really home every weekend? Any other info or advice?

Its tough, read what I answered to Lamers post. I can't help you with the family friendly companys, my husband works for a pretty goood company but it is just a small, family owned business in NS.

my husband has been driving off and on for the last 7 years. when he and i first met he was gone 10 days and home 2 and i had a rough time at first but kept busy and it helped alot. in january he got out of the truck for about 6 months and it was nice that he was here every night and on the weekends and that we could do things on a whim but now that he's back on the road i have to say that i have been having problems. the reason is he gets one day for every week he's out. well since our daughter was born in july he's been on the road and is about to come home for 4 days. as for how long he's gonna be out, that is up to the company and their policy and then him. as for family friendly companies, i can't tell ya. most don't have a problem if you ride along, they just have you fill out a form. as for kids it's iffy. your best bet is when he starts looking for a company (if he doesn't already have one) then ask about a rider policy. they will fill ya'll in on what their policy is. some have 18 and up only. i personally cope by talking to him as much as possible on the phone and keeping busy. it's helpfull that our daughter is only a month old cause she keeps me busy with diapers and feedings. as for if they are home every weekend. that depends on the run. if its dedicated and that's what you were told then it could be. if he's doing regional then probably. but then again i have had to learn the hard way, don't always believe everything the recruiters tell you as they will tell you what you want to hear to get you to sign with them. if ya'll don't have one then get a really good cell plan as in the beginning you will probably be on the phone alot. another tip is don't stress him out with alot of stuff going on at home as while he's out there there's really nothing he can do about it. make alot of friends that you can spend time with to kill time while he's gone if you aren't working as that will help too. well that's all i can think of at the moment. hope this helps.
